This residence posed an interesting challenge to us. The project brief was to design a spacious duplex above and existing single-story load-bearing structure. But with very small spans, the existing structure did not provide the flexibility required to design the larger spaces that were envisioned for the floors above. Our solution involved adding three columns, without disturbing the existing ground floor structure. This gave rise to a completely open plan above the large rooms that flowed into each other.
