This residence posed an interesting challenge to us. The project brief was to design a spacious duplex above and existing single-story load-bearing structure. But with very small spans, the existing structure did not provide the flexibility required to design the larger spaces that were envisioned for the floors above. Our solution involved adding three columns, without disturbing the existing ground floor structure. This gave rise to a completely open plan above the large rooms that flowed into each other.
The new home was designed around a skylit central courtyard. The stack effect helps keep the interiors cooler with natural air circulation forcing the warm air out of the house. With all rooms facing this double-height space, there is ample natural light on the upper floors.
The aluminum louvers in the facade, while forming an elevation feature also prevents the master bedroom from getting heated up by the powerful rays of the western sun.
